Powerboat excercise

Result of today's excercise in the 'Drawing Techniques for Presentation' course at the faculty. The excercise consisted of taking a traditionally drawn powerboat design, and apply some photoshop techniques to it to a presentable level.

Paintings

So, after nearly a month of posting something I thought I'd upload two recent paintings since the last paintings received so many views. ..Don't even know whether to call them finished yet, but let's presume they are.

Design Drawing class sketches

Sketches from a couple of months ago, made during the classes of Design Drawing at the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft. Quick sketches to help explain basic theory (and some other stuff) to first year students.

Rietveld's Kratstoel

Assignment for my job at the faculty of industrial design engineering, department of design drawing.
This is a chair designed by the famous dutch architect, Gerrit Rietveld.
Linework with fineliner, coloring done in Photoshop.

Automotive sketches

Some automotive sketches. The main objective was to create many variations in a short amount of time. The theme was fast cars, so never mind the two on the left :)

Character Sketches

Red pencil & fineliner.

Quick sketch (about one hour) of a robot, for the purpose of practicing a metallic look. Done with fineliner and marker.

..Part two of last weeks video appears to be too big to upload.. So here's the final result image. Changed the cast shadow; seemed to work better this way.

Car sketching process

Back from vacation and up an' at it again. Something fun this time; I downloaded some free screen recording software (camstudio) and recorded the process of sketching out a fast car. The quality isn't all that great, but it might still be fun to watch..! Next week, I'll upload part two..

Painting

Phew, busy times... Many projects, both studywise and businesswise.. So for a change I thought it might be fun to post a painting, something I've been doing with more and more enjoyment for the past two-three years. This a pretty recent one. Acrylic on board.

A very rough sketch, practicing window light. Did this a while back, I should take the time to refine it some day... The goal was to practice some window-lit effects.

Fineliner girls

Some sketches in fineliner on regular A4 printing paper. I like the drawing style for the hair, think I'll (try to!) stick to it more often.

Car stucture sketches

These were done for my automotive design course. We had to sketch these from reference pictures, about half an hour each. The first one was done with  just a fineliner (some black markering for the tires, though). The second was done with fineliner and after that a black marker to punch out the most significant lines and areas. For the third, only a marker was used which was scary to begin with, but proved to be very liberating in the end..! They're a long shot from perfect, but overall pretty accurate and I was quite pleased. I wonder if I will still be pleased looking a them in two months or so.. lol.

The trick is not to get intimidated by the amount of detail and level of density that the original pictures showed.

As always with drawing from reference, look for the big shapes first and get their proportions in accurately. Do NOT start working on details like nuts and bolts and what not, untill the main shapes are accurately placed! Simplification is the keyword in drawing from reference, whether it''s faces, buildings or anything else. At least, that's what works for me I guess.. :)This was a great excercise in simplification.

Portrait practice

Some practice in photoshop. Turned out okay, could still use a little tweaking though.. Anyways I'm getting more & more confident in portraits, which gravely ups the fun factor..! However, much & much more practice is needed for me.

Digital sketches

Done digitally, a bit in the style of Marcos Mateu-Mestre although I could never even begin to dream of getting close to his level of skill... For those that don't know him; go check him out. He is awesome.

Quick face sketch

One from a while back. A very quick and simple sketch, done in photoshop. I believe I just used two layers, one with a reddish base color and an overlay layer with yellow for the light effect.
